No matter where you live, chances are there's a wetland nearby that provides important environmental benefits to your community. Wetlands support diverse fish and wildlife species, filter pollutants from rainwater runoff, help recharge groundwater supplies, prevent flooding and enhance property value. Despite their benefits, the United States loses about 60,000 acres of wetlands each year. Development that occurs on or nearby wetlands can lead to loss of habitat, changes in water flow, pollution runoff, and other impacts.

Earth Calendar for May 25th and 26th

The US Environmental Protection Agency is launching a new design competition called the Campus RainWorks Challenge to encourage student teams on college and university campuses across the country to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. The competition will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches and help train the next generation of landscape architects, planners and engineers in green infrastructure, principles and design. Registration opens September 4th and entries must be submitted by December 14th, 2012 for consideration.

Ohioans who have questions - on everything from agricultural enterprise budgets, gardening, crop production, nutrition, producing fruits and vegetables - have a new way to find answers. County websites of Ohio State University Extension now have an "Ask A County Expert" tool where Ohioans can ask questions related to the educational programs Extension offers. Programs offered encompass four areas: agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, community development and 4-H youth development. OSU Extension's county websites are easy to find.

Earth Calendar for May 21st and 22nd

Volunteers are needed for River Sweep 2012, scheduled for Saturday, June 16th along the shoreline of the Ohio River and its many tributaries. River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond. More than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris. This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states. The River Sweep is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO). ORSANCO is the water pollution control agency for the Ohio River and its tributaries.

Now scientists have created a nitrogen footprint calculator to help you determine your nitrogen footprint. Why is this important? Nitrogen is an element that is essential for life. About 78% of the earth's atmosphere is made up of nitrogen gas. However, burning fossil fuels, food production and nitrogen fertilizers release lots of surplus nitrogen into the environment. Just like a carbon footprint, your nitrogen footprint is how much nitrogen your daily activities produce over a period of time.

As part of Montgomery County's Neighborhood Stabilization Program, the Home Builders Association of Dayton is presenting the first Eco-Rehabarama in the community of Huber Heights. Ten near-historical located in one of the original sections of Huber Heights, Ohio, will be rehabilitated to meet or exceed today's standards for safe, comfortable, efficient and sustainable living. These once abandoned or foreclosed homes will be totally reconstructed after major deconstruction that will take the homes back to the original framed structure and infamous Huber brick veneer.

When do two wheels become six? When you bike and ride on Metro. Every Cincinnati Metro bus is equipped with a front-mounted bike rack that's easy to use. Best of all, when you pay your fare your bike rides free! To celebrate Bike to Work Day, bicycle commuters can ride for free an Metro, Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky buses, and Clermont Transportation Connection buses on Thursday, May 17th, when they transport their bike on the bus bike rack. Bike racks are on the front of all Metro, TANK and CTC buses and can be used at any bus stop including Government Square.

Local artists have generously donated original pieces of art that celebrate water to help raise funds for preserving the beauty of the Little Miami River.
