Highland Heights, Kentucky – At its annual graduation ceremonies this coming Sunday, Cincinnati's Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion will bestow its highest award, The Presidential Medallion, on retired Major General Sidney Shachnow. He's the only Holocaust survivor to achieve the rank of general in the U.S. Army. HUC says the award is given to those whose extraordinary life achievements embody the ethics and principles for which the college-institute stands. In Part One of a two-part interview, WNKU's Steve Hirschberg asked the general about his experiences as a Jewish boy in Lithuania when the Nazis invaded Shachnow's homeland.
