Lydia Loveless to Headline Paddlefest this Saturday
Join WNKU and several thousand of our friends for the 13th Annual Ohio River Paddlefest Weekend this June 20 - 22 at Coney Island and Yeatman's Cove. For the first time ever, Paddlefest will take place Friday through Sunday instead of Thursday through Saturday, opening up all kinds of new possibilities. For music fans, this means a FULL day of non-stop music beginning at 11am Saturday morning and going until midnight with headliner, Lydia Loveless! But, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
The weekend's festivities begin Friday morning with the Kid's Outdoor Adventure Expo. The expo is free and open to the public and is presented by the Green Umbrella, The Carole Ann & Ralph V. Haile, Jr./US Bank Foundation, Interact for Health, Great Parks and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Kids from summer camps, families, day camps, girl and boy scouts, summer programs and more are invited to come out and enjoy the day and learn through fun. All exhibits, presenters and performers will be open all day during the event. Some of the presenters will have scheduled performance times, so please check out the schedule before you arrive. New kids' activities this year include the Get Fit, Don’t Sit pedometer walking program, fishing on Lake Como, Obstacle Course for kids, Zumbatomics, Yoga, Tai Chi, dragonboat rides, storytelling, Madcap Puppet show plus new exhibits and a petting zoo. The Kids Expo is THE water safety and outdoor environmental education event for kids in the Midwest.
On Saturday, the fun continues with live music on two stages, a gear swap, food & beer vendors, boat demos, classes & clinics, family fishing on Lake Como, and more. This is also the time to drop off your boat and register for Sunday's canoe and kayak races. Music will begin at 10am on the Local Music Stage with an open Ukulele jam (you read right) followed by performances from G Burton Story, Casey Campbell, Jody Stapelton, Hayden Kaye, Buffalo Wabs & the Price Hill Hustle, Rattlesnakin' Daddies, and Jake Speed & the Freddies. At 7pm, head over to the WNKU Main Stage for Public, Heath & Molly, Jeremy Pinnell & the 55's, and this year's headliner and Rolling Stone magazine's "Artist You Need to Know", Lydia Loveless.
On Sunday morning, it's the reason why this whole crazy weekend-long festival was started in the first place. The U.S. Coast Guard will close the Ohio River to commercial and power boat traffic as paddlers launch more than 1,400 canoes, kayaks and human powered boats for an 8.2 mile trip from Coney Island to the Public Landing in downtown Cincinnati. Even if you can't participate in the races or the leisurely float, you should join the paddlers at the Gold Star Chili Finish Line festival at Yeatman's Cove. In addition to enjoying the spectacle of watching 1400 human-powered boats arrive in downtown Cincinnati, you'll be able to take in more live entertainment, refreshments and exhibits until 2pm.
So make plans now for a full weekend of outdoor fun, live music, and a celebration of all the Ohio River has to offer at the 13th Annual Ohio River Paddlefest. See you there!
