Kentucky Insurance Department Sends Emergency Response Team to Storm-Affected Areas
An emergency response team from the Kentucky Department of Insurance is visiting areas of Johnson, Laurel, Lawrence, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Morgan and Trimble Counties today. Team members are assessing the insurance company response and are going door to door in storm-affected areas. State Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark says "preliminary reports show that many companies have responded quickly and already have adjusters on the ground". Clark is urging consumers to be patient in working through the claims process. She says insurance companies are pulling adjusters from other parts of the country to handle the large number of claims from the Kentucky storms and tornadoes. She says those with questions about the claims process or those who have not been able to reach their insurance company should call the Department of Insurance at 800-595-6053.
Kentucky Insurance Department officials say, if your home is damaged to the point where you cannot live in it, you should leave information on your property so that the adjuster can contact you. In addition, when the adjuster arrives, you should write down his or her name and contact information. Officials recommend that you take photos of the damage to your property and that you keep receipts for all storm-related purchases. To avoid scam artists, you should also ask your adjuster for ID to make sure he or she actually represents your insurance company.
