Earth Calendar for November 28th and Novemeber 29th
Simple leaks can sap home energy efficiency by 5% to 30% per year, according to the Department of Energy.
That means it pays to seal gaps with caulking and weather stripping. Seal the air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes, electrical outlets, gaps around chimneys and recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets. You may already know where some air leakage occurs in your home, such as an under-the-door draft, but you'll need to find the less obvious gaps to properly air seal your home. Take a close look at places where 2 different building materials meet, like corners around chimneys, where wires or pipes exit and along the foundation. Learn how to take a heat loss calculation for your home at the Department of Energy's website.
