Earth Calendar for May 2nd and May 3rd
Nearly Half the U.S. Lives with Unhealthy Air. More than 147 million Americans live in counties where the air can harm their health and shorten their lives.
This week, the American Lung Association released their 15th annual “State of the Air” report. While this year's report shows that the nation has reduced its pollution over the past 15 years, the report provides strong evidence that climate change threatens air quality—and public health. Thanks to cleaner power plants and cleaner diesel fleets, the good news is that the nation continued to reduce year-round particle pollution. By contrast, this year's "State of the Air" report shows that ozone—the most widespread pollutant—increased across the country. Warmer temperatures raise the risk for ozone pollution, and climate change sets the stage for tougher challenges to protect human health. We must meet these challenges head on to protect the health of all Americans—especially those living with lung diseases such as lung cancer, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We all have the right to breathe healthy air. Find out how your community measures up online.
