Earth Calendar for June 16th and June 17th
Volunteers are needed to remove trash and debris from the Clermont County banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries during the 25th annual Ohio River Sweep June 20th and June 21st.
This annual riverbank cleanup, which began in 1989, draws thousands of volunteers from six states who scour the banks of the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Cairo, Ill. Last year, 271 volunteers locally picked up 6 tons of garbage and 116 tires along 6 miles of shoreline. A total of 7,000 tons of debris were collected last year along the entire length of the river and its tributaries, an area that covers almost 3,000 miles. In Clermont County, the Ohio River Sweep is sponsored by the Valley View Foundation Clean and Green Program, the Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District, and ORSANCO (Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission).Removing the litter and debris enhances both the water quality and wildlife potential. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to play an active role in improving the environment in the Ohio River Valley.Volunteers will receive free T-shirts, gloves, bags and refreshments.
