Ben Gibbard's 'Former Lives'

The CD of the Month for November comes from Ben Gibbard.

When Gibbard gets away from his day job as front-man for Death Cab For Cutie, he apparently is able to record his solo debut. Gibbard describes the album, not as 'opening a new chapter', but rather closing a few old ones. Former Lives, recalls the ups and downs of his past over the last 8 years, including three failed relationships, one of which includes a very infamous divorce.

Before you go thinking Former Lives merely contains lines of depressing truths, it's clear that these songs are just the built-up stories through the years, that needed to be shared. Maybe they somehow slipped through Death Cab For Cutie's agenda, or maybe just a little to personal for anyone else to be a part of. Whatever they may be, they are mature, and quite a remarkable testament to this artistic songwriter as an individual. Though totally solo-written, the album is boosted with a few Beatles-esque harmonies from a one Aimee Mann in the song, "Bigger Than Love".
