Steve has been a public radio news reporter in the Cincinnati area for three decades. He began with WGUC, then WVXU, and in 2005, came to WNKU. Steve covers breaking news, writes WNKU’s local afternoon newscasts and produces feature-length interviews and other feature stories that are heard each weekday. Steve also serves as WNKU’s News Assignment Editor. Steve has written and produced news stories and features for National Public Radio, the worldwide broadcasts of Voice of America, Ohio Public Radio, and Monitor Radio.

Storms Wreak Heavy Damage to 100 Ohio Buildings

About half of the buildings in Moscow, Ohio are among nearly 100 structures in Southwest Ohio with major damage after this weekend's storms. Clermont County building inspectors say their initial assessment found 47 structures in Moscow have major damage and 54 have minor damage. Homes, businesses and government buildings had roofs blow off and walls crumble, when a tornado rumbled through the village of more than 200 residents Friday night. A Moscow resident was one of three people killed in Southwest Ohio.

Snow Adds to Misery in Some Storm-Hit Areas

Snow is adding to the misery of storm victims cleaning up in West Liberty, where a tornado demolished the downtown and neighborhoods in the eastern Kentucky town.  Nearly half a foot of snow fell overnight in West Liberty. Utility crews there are working to restore power and residents are making repairs to homes damaged from the tornado that blasted through town Friday evening. Utilities say more than nine thousand customers are without power statewide from Friday's storms. Nearly nine thousand more customers are without power due to today's snowfall.

Clermont County Leads Cleanup Efforts in Moscow, Ohio

Clermont County has brought in two 20-foot by 30-foot public-support trailers to Moscow, Ohio this morning. They're in the parking lot at 30 Wells Street to help those hit by Friday's tornadoes and severe storms. The following agencies now have representatives at the public support trailer:

The Clermont County Department of Job and Family Services-which will offer public assistance and help to replace items, such as public assistance cards, that might have been lost in the storms.

GE Aviation in Evendale Hosts Program on Tuskegee Airmen

GE Aviation is presenting today a special program for local elementary school students.  It's entitled "Bringing Them Home Safely...Discovering Our Aviation Purpose in the Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen". The company's African-American Forum is hosting the program. WNKU's  Steve Hirschberg talked with Randall Stokes, the President of the forum's Cincinnati chapter.

PWC to Hold 15th Annual Oscar Night America Gala

Next Sunday night is Academy Awards night; and in Cincinnati that means it's time for the annual Oscar Night America gala. It's one of only 49 parties that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially sanctions around the country. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit group People Working Cooperatively. WNKU's Steve Hirschberg asked PWC spokeswoman Kim Sullivan how the group got to host an Oscar Night gala.

Tomorrow, the Victoria  Theatre in Dayton, Ohio is presenting the world premiere of a play called "Tenderly...the Rosemary Clooney Musical". WNKU's Steve Hirschberg talked about the production with Janet Yates Vogt, who co-authored the work with Mark Friedman.

Art Academy of Cincinnati Gets New President

The Art Academy of Cincinnati has a new president.  He is John Sullivan, who comes to Cincinnati from the Watkins College of Art, Design and Film in Nashville.  Sullivan notes that the art academy was a pioneer in moving several years ago to the city's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood from its long-time home next to the Cincinnati Art Museum in Eden Park.  He tells WNKU's Steve Hirschberg that after such a bold move, as he calls it, the academy now  has plenty of company in its new neighborhood.
